Red Rooster on Urbanspoon

I recently had the opportunity to finally experience Red Rooster for the first time.  Unfortunately the dinner was for a good friend's going away party, but the somber mood did not detract from the amazing experience.  In case you, like me, are unfamiliar with gourmet culinary circles, Red Rooster is chef Marcus Smuelsson's foray into the Harlem restaurant scene.  Born in Ethiopia and raised in Sweden, Marcus Samuelsson is a critically acclaimed chef, author, and reality TV star with a well-regarded reputation for bringing unique and distinct dishes together that reflect his diverse background and culinary education.

Located one block south of the famous Sylvia's, Red Rooster is certainly positioned to make a bold statement in the neighborhood, and with frequent events, live music, and a menu that includes everything from Jerk Chicken to Helga's Meatballs, the food and experience do not disappoint.  During my visit, I opted for the Fried Yard Bird, which is dark meat fried chicken and gravy served over mashed potatoes with a side of sauce and bread and butter pickles.  The chicken was crispy, well seasoned, and perfectly balanced with the smooth mashed potatoes.  The sauce was tangy with a little spice, and the pickles added just enough of a sweet and sour counterpoint to the meal.

After dinner, my party couldn't resist sharing the Warm Apple Crisp for dessert.  Now, I'm normally a sucker for anything a la mode, but this was literally one of the best deserts I've had in recent memory.  The apples were warm and rich, the oatmeal topping crunchy, and the ice cream cool and sweet.

So the next time you find yourself in Harlem... actually, you know what?  Make a special trip.  Yes, to Harlem.  Red Rooster is that good.  And with New York City Restaurant Week coming up, you have no excuse.  And when you get back, swing back by here and leave a comment to let us know what you thought!
